The Whitsundays Festival of Motoring, the first of its kind to be held in the Whitsundays is geared up to one of the main attractions on the calendar for motoring enthusiasts and the local community. The 3-day event is set to draw interest far and wide, motorsport lovers and competitors who will gather amongst the stunning Whitsundays 74 Island Wonders for the fun packed event aimed at showcasing the Whitsunday region as one of Queensland’s premier event and holiday destinations.

The Whitsundays 74 Island Wonders, just on the beautiful tropical coast of Queensland Australia, at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef is indeed a feast for the senses, from the stunning natural landscapes of coasts and islands to secluded beaches and friendly towns, a Whitsundays trip is one you surely won’t forget in a hurry!

The vision of the Whitsunday Festival of Motoring will grow to have a positive transcendence of the promising rally championship from a State to a National and then to an International level rally. In year one, the festival will include a round of the Queensland Rally Championships in year 2019 and grow to host the Australian Rally Championships in subsequent years.    From there the event growth has potential for the Whitsundays to be recognised as the premium motorsport rally location in Queensland.

  • Weekend Activities

The Whitsundays Festival of Motoring features 3 days of car parades, motoring festivals and rallies. More specifically, 9 events will be held across the long weekend;

  • Airlie Beach Car Parade

A car parade will be held at Airlie Beach with 15-20 vintage, classic and modern cars parading along the esplanade for all to see.  Be sure to watch out for these cars between 12:00pm and 5:15pm on Friday the 3rd of May, 2019.

  • Welcome and Festival Opening at Abell Point Marina, Foreshore and Car Park

The official welcome and opening of the festival will be held between 4:00pm and 11:00pm on Friday the 3rd of May, 2019. Highlights of this event include show and shine classic, vintage and modern cars display, community welcome and festival opening, Rally Whitsunday ceremonial start plus kids’ activities and live music. All of the Whitsunday community are welcome to attend.

  • Rally Whitsunday*

The Queensland Rally Championships will be held between 07:30am and 5:30pm on Saturday 4th of May, 2019. This segment includes 120km of race split of multiple stages, private land and Bowen Town Centre and anticipated to involve 20 cars. Locations for this segment are Hydeaway Bay, Bowen town streets and foreshore.

The rally spectator viewing timings will be shared in 2019.

*The 4th May date is the “proposed” date for the Rally which is to be confirmed.

  • Flagstaff Hill Climb

The Flagstaff Hill Climb is an open category that to be held on Saturday, the 4th of May. For this event, spectator viewing areas will be provided for enthusiasts and sponsors.

The hill climb competitor and spectator viewing times will be shared here in 2019.

  • Bowen Motoring Festival

The Bowen Motoring Festival will be a day packed of action featuring vintage, classic and modern car static displays, food & beverages, kids activities and live Rally Whitsundays updates of leader listings as they race the distance of 120km . Spectators will be welcome to participate in the festival and watch the Rally Whitsundays leg as the cars race the circuit of the Bowen town streets and foreshore. A prime position to watch the rally will be from unique location of The Grand View Hotel.

  • Rally Whitsunday Presentation Evening

The presentation evening will be held at the Mantra Club Croc on Saturday the 4thof May, 2019 and feature the awards of Round 2 Whitsundays Rally part of the 2019 Queensland Rally Championship*.  Tickets can be purchased for this event till sold out. More details and key timings, will be displayed here in 2019.

  • Proserpine Motoring Festival

The Proserpine Showgrounds promises to be fun packed family event. Key activities of this segment include show and shine, people choice competition, food and beverages and activities for kids on Sunday the 5th of May, 2019. More details will be announced.

  • Tonker Park

This event will comprise of a Rally Race Khanacross being held between 12:00 and 3:00pm on Sunday 5th of May, 2019.  More details will be announced.

  • Festival of Motoring Closing Party

Marking the grand finale of the Festival, the closing party is scheduled to take place at the Mantra Club Croc between 1:00pm and 8:00pm on Sunday the 5th of May, 2019. Highlights of this closing party includes show and shine car display, people’s choice community car park competition, live music, loads of great food and face painting activities for children. Airport Information

Festival participants who would prefer to come in by air have the option of coming in via the Proserpine Airport (aka Whitsunday Coast Airport). Popular airlines flying the route include Jetstar Airways and Virgin Australia.

Key highlights of the airport

  • Located just 30 minutes from Airlie Beach and 12 kilometres south of Proserpine, the Whitsunday Coast Airport offers direct flights to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
  • Two commercial airlines: Virgin Australia and Jetstar can be booked through airline websites and/or accredited travel agents
  • Facilities are available for Private Charter Flights and light aircraft. Pilot information for Whitsunday Coast Airport please call the Reporting Officer number on 0417 762 235.
  • The airport allows access to free WIFI to all visitors and one can stay updated with Airport news the Whitsunday Coast Airport social media pages
  • There are Coach transfers available to/from Whitsunday Coast Airport connecting with all island transfer ferries.
  • Buses and taxis are available at Whitsunday Coast (Proserpine) Airport to bring you into Airlie Beach, Proserpine or Bowen upon arrival.

Getting to/From the festival activities

Local buses operate within the Whitsunday region. Refer to the local bus network (link) for details.


Once you arrive at the Whitsundays, you have varied options of getting around the region.  You can take a bus, taxi, drive and/ or walk;

Buses and Taxis:

  • Daily bus service connecting Proserpine, Cannonvale, Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour from designated bus stops every 30-60 minutes on Whitsunday Transit.
  • Safe night service between Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket 7 days a week until 10:30pm with wheelchair accessible facilities.
  • Whitsunday Taxis are available 24 hours a day.

Car Hire:

  • There a many car hire companies available at outlets in Airlie Beach
  • Local rental companies are also available.

Getting around Airlie Beach on foot is easy due to the flat and scenic boardwalk that curves around the foreshore of Airlie Beach to Abell Point Marina and through to Cannonvale Beach.

Being a Volunteer at the Whitsundays Festival of Motoring 2019 is an opportunity to be a part of something bigger, exciting and unforgettable.

This is our chance to come together and showcase what the Whitsundays region exuberates off; from its beautiful surroundings to its amazing local community. We look forward to putting together a memorable experience for all motor enthusiasts, athletes and the entire Whitsundays community.

There are many roles ranging from Entertainment Assistants, Information Assistants, Media Assistants, Transport Information Assistants to Festival Assistants to the action packed roles of the rally for marshalling that you can take up, you will be an essential part in assisting the team in the successful delivery of the Whitsundays Festival of Motoring.

Who can volunteer?

Motorsport lovers, spectators, every person who is willing to be part of this historical motorsport event. You will be required to be 18 years unless your involved through a club and have legal rights to work/volunteer in Australia.

What benefits do I stand to gain as a volunteer?

Volunteers would get a first hand view of all the action marking the festival, meet with and interact with competitors, and other participants at the event. Volunteer would also have the satisfaction of having played an active role in making history.

Is it safe to volunteer?

Yes, safety measure would be in place to ensure the safety of not only volunteers but other participants at the festival.

Event Role Locations

The roles for the festival will be at Airlie Beach, Hydeaway Bay, Abell Point Marina, Bowen Town Centre and foreshore, Proserpine, Flagstaff Hill and Tonker Park.

Training Information

Experienced rally and event staff will train all volunteers. General Induction and Role specific training will be held in April and May 2019 prior to the commencement of the event for 3-4 hours.  This training is mandatory to ensure you are equipped with the information necessary to perform your role. Look out on this space for training dates.

Where do I find out more about my role?

Once you are offered a voluntary role, you will be able to find out more about your assigned team and role by attending the training days and meeting members of your team.

What can I expect from the training days? 

There will be an introductory session to introduce the Volunteer Program and a role specific induction to ensure that you have all the required information about your role. Role-specific training will detail responsibilities of the appointed volunteer role.

When will I get my roster?

We will be releasing your roster in a phased approach depending on your assigned team from March 2019. This provides ample time to adjust rosters to best fit the shift and your availability. We ask our volunteers to accept rosters by the end of March 2019 so everyone is well prepared for the festival.

Can I volunteer with my bestie or partner?

Of course! If you would like to volunteer on the same shifts as your mates please do inform us in advance by filling out the details on the Volunteer Expression of Interest Form.

What time and shift length are the shifts?

The shift times per day will be allocated any time from 6:00 am to latest ending 11:00 pm. Please note that shifts per person will be 6-8 hour shifts.

How many shifts do you expect me to do?

We would be delighted if you could help us with 2 shifts. However, we do understand if you are able to do 1. Please ensure that you put in your availability on the form

What will I receive as a Volunteer?

As a Volunteer you will receive training and supervision from experienced rally and event staff. You will also have the opportunity to work within a team and festival environment and contributing to the success of the Whitsunday Festival of Motoring. All Volunteers will receive a certificate of appreciation.

Will I be required to wear a uniform?

Yes. All volunteers are required to wear the assigned festival t-shirt while on shift. The uniforms will be provided by the event staff at your training session.  We recommend you wear comfy, closed toe shoes.

Do I need to be over 18 years ?

Yes. You must be over 18 years of age unless an authorised club has been accepted
